Self-drive rental is growing in India, but we don't recommend it for visitors, for genuine safety and peace-of-mind reasons: road conditions vary wildly, signage is inconsistent, and local driving customs take years to read correctly. Your chauffeur has spent those years so you don't have to.

In India this isn't the custom — drivers usually have their own favourite stops and may politely decline for social reasons. It never hurts to ask, but don't be surprised either way; your driver is comfortable, provided for, and focused on your journey.
